| Obverse description | Facing right bust of a maenad in fine Greek style, her elaborately dressed hair rendered in flowing wavy locks swept back from the forehead and secured with a wreath or band, falling in rich curling tresses behind the neck. A distinctive triple-pendant earring is visible below the ear. The portrait is rendered with considerable artistic sophistication, the facial features displaying the graceful idealism characteristic of late Classical Cretan coinage. The field is plain and the flan is irregular, as typical of hammered issues of this period. |
