Obverse description Pegasus in flight to the left, depicted in a dynamic, naturalistic style characteristic of early Corinthian-type staters. The winged horse is shown with forelegs raised and wings outstretched, the body rendered with fine detail against a plain, flat field. The flan is broad and irregular, with a slightly worn surface consistent with circulation. No legend is present on this side.

Additional information

Ambracia, the Corinthian colony on the Ambracian Gulf, struck pegasi closely following Corinthian weight standards — a deliberate alignment that kept Ambracian silver circulating freely across western Greek trade networks. The city's output intensified after 404 BC, when the collapse of Athenian naval dominance reopened Adriatic and Epirote commerce to Corinthian-sphere poleis that had previously operated under constraint.

Ravel's classification of this type took decades to stabilize; early attributions frequently conflated Ambracian dies with those of Anactorium and Leucas, all three cities sharing the same pegasos-based module.
