| Reverse description | The hero Ajax strides vigorously to right, depicted fully nude save for a crested Corinthian helmet, his muscular form rendered in the vigorous late Classical style. In his raised right hand he brandishes a short sword, while his left arm bears a large round hoplon shield, the interior of which is elaborately decorated with a griffin running right and a palmette ornament. The ethnic inscription ΟΠΟΝΤΙΩΝ arcs around the upper field, identifying the issuing community of Opous. A solitary lambda (Λ), the initial letter of Lokris, appears between the hero's striding legs in the lower field. |
