Itanos occupied the far northeastern tip of Crete, and its relative isolation from the island's dominant poleis gave it an unusually independent commercial character. The city maintained direct trading contacts with Cyprus and the Levantine coast, which likely explains why its silver coinage persisted through the fourth century while many smaller Cretan mints went silent. Staters attributed to Itanos are genuinely scarce in trade — the Weber and Bement collections each held a single example, which tells its own story about survival rates from this mint.
