| Beschrijving keerzijde | Upright winged thunderbolt rendered in fine relief at center, with spread wings above and tightly coiled volutes below, the whole contained within a dotted border circle set within a shallow incuse square, a hallmark of early Classical Elean stater reverses. The ethnic abbreviation F-A (representing the digamma-initial form of FΑΛΕΙΩΝ, the Elean ethnic) appears across the central field to either side of the thunderbolt shaft. The thunderbolt, as the supreme attribute of Zeus, underscores the religious and civic authority of the Elean state administering the great Panhellenic sanctuary. The incuse circle creates a cameo-like effect enhancing the visual prominence of the design. The overall execution reflects the high standard of die engraving associated with the Olympian series of the 89th and 90th Olympiads. |
