| Reverse description | Nike, the goddess of victory, portrayed full-length and seated to left atop a two-stepped plinth, clad in a peplos and chiton rendered with fine drapery folds. In her raised right hand she holds a long palm branch extending diagonally across the field, while her left hand rests upon the upper step. Beneath the steps, an olive spray — a direct allusion to the sacred olive crown awarded at the Olympic Games — occupies the lower field. The retrograde or standard inscription F A (rendered as FALEIS or interpreted as the ethnic of the Eleians) appears in the field, identifying the issuing authority of the sanctuary at Olympia. |
