Lapethos was one of the Phoenician-founded city-kingdoms on the northern coast of Cyprus, and its coinages of the late fifth century BC reflect the island's position between competing Hellenic and Achaemenid spheres of influence. Persian imperial pressure over Cyprus was near its peak in this period, following the collapse of the Delian League's Cypriot campaigns after Cimon's death at the siege of Citium in 449 BC. The Lapethian stater series is sparsely documented compared to the more prolific issues of Salamis or Paphos — surviving examples in any condition are genuinely uncommon.
