The entire design is set within a deep circular incuse square, a hallmark of the archaic and transitional incuse coinage tradition of Magna Graecia, here persisting into the early Classical period at Poseidonia. The incuse technique creates a mirror-image relief against the recessed background, lending the type a characteristic sculptural quality. |
