Pherai's political situation in this decade was precarious at best. The city had been the seat of the notorious Thessalian tyrants — Jason, Alexander, and their successors — whose brutal rule ended with Alexander's assassination in 358 BC. By the 270s, Pherai was reduced to a secondary Thessalian polis operating under Macedonian hegemony, and coinage from this period reflects a civic authority scrambling to assert local identity within tight constraints.
