Obverse description Standing nude male figure, identified as Velchanos (the Cretan Zeus), depicted in full frontal stance with head turned to the left. The figure holds a cock in his right hand and rests his left arm against the trunk of a plane tree, rendered in high relief to the right. To the left of the figure, a large serpent coils upward in a spiral, a symbol of chthonic divine power. The composition reflects the archaic Cretan artistic tradition, with bold, well-modelled forms typical of late Classical Cretan coinage.
