| Obverse description | Central type consisting of a six-grained barley ear rendered in high relief, with pairs of alternating grains arranged symmetrically along the stalk and small additional terminal grains at the apex, characteristic of the early Archaic coinage of Metapontion. The ear is flanked by elongated, serrated leaves extending diagonally outward on either side. A retrograde Greek ethnic legend appears in the field, reading ΑΤ ƎΜ, identifying the issuing city. The entire design is set within a plain border, consistent with the artistic conventions of Magna Graecia in the late sixth century BC. |

| Reverse description | Incuse barley ear of six grains rendered in intaglio, being the exact mirror-image negative of the obverse type, produced by the distinctive incuse technique characteristic of early Achaean colonies in Magna Graecia. The stalk and individual grain pairs are clearly delineated in sunken relief, with flanking leaf elements visible within the recessed field. The surface of the incuse depression retains fine die-work detail. No legend or additional device is present on the reverse. |
