| Obverse description | Bearded male head facing left, identified as the satyr Pan, rendered in vigorous high relief characteristic of Pantikapaion's finest gold coinage. The effigy is adorned with a wreath of ivy and grape clusters set atop flowing, dishevelled hair and a prominent, wild beard with curling locks. The facial features are boldly modelled, conveying a rustic, divine character associated with Dionysiac cult imagery. The style reflects the accomplished engravers active at the Pantikapaion mint during the late fourth century BC. |
