Obverse description Nude ithyphallic satyr depicted in the archaic running-kneeling pose (knielauf), facing right, carrying off a struggling nymph whom he grasps firmly about the waist. The satyr wears a pointed cap and is rendered with vigorous, high-relief modelling characteristic of early Thasian coinage. The nymph raises her arms in resistance, her drapery rendered in flowing archaic folds. The composition fills the entire flan, with no border or legend, reflecting the purely pictorial convention of early Greek island coinage.
