| Beschrijving keerzijde | A nude Hermes stands in three-quarter pose, his chlamys draped over his left shoulder and arms, and the winged petasus upon his head. On his raised left arm he cradles the infant Archas, the eponymous hero of Arkadia, who reaches upward with his right hand to touch the god's petasus. Hermes holds the kerykeion (caduceus) in his right hand. The reverse legend ΦΕΝΕΩΝ, identifying the issuing city of Pheneos, appears in the field. The composition is rendered with narrative sophistication characteristic of mid-fourth century BC Peloponnesian coinage. |
