Aspendos in Pamphylia was one of the last Greek cities in Asia Minor to abandon its own coinage in favor of Alexandrine types, continuing to strike civic silver well into the period when most neighboring mints had already capitulated to Macedonian monetary authority. The city's economy depended heavily on the salt trade and the export of goods through its river port on the Eurymedon, which sustained both the demand for local coinage and the silver supply to produce it.
The SNG France 114 reference places this piece within a well-documented die sequence studied by Tekin and others examining late Aspendian output.
