Ambracia was a Corinthian colony founded around 625 BC, and its coinage closely follows the Corinthian weight standard — a deliberate political signal of the mother city's influence well into the fifth century. The date range here corresponds to the Archidamian War and its aftermath, during which Ambracia suffered catastrophically: at the Battle of Idomene in 426 BC, the city lost an entire field army to Demosthenes in a single night engagement, a blow Thucydides called the greatest disaster to befall any Greek city relative to its population in the war.
Whether this stater predates or postdates that slaughter is unknown, but output from the mint was clearly sustained regardless.
