Obverse description A pomegranate (melon in Greek, the punning civic badge of Melos) depicted in high relief at center, shown in three-quarter view with the fruit's characteristic segmented body and calyx clearly rendered. The design occupies the majority of the flan, set within a slightly recessed field typical of archaic Cycladic coinage. The surface exhibits the rough, granular texture characteristic of hand-struck fifth-century BC silver coinage.
