Obverse description A sphinx in archaic style crouching to the left occupies the central field, its feathered wings folded against the body and forepaws extended forward. The creature's leonine haunches and human head are rendered in bold relief characteristic of early Ionian coinage. A small amphora or vessel appears to the right of the sphinx in the lower field. The flan is irregular and the fabric typical of the mid-archaic period, with no legend or inscription present.
