Leukas was unusual among Akarnanian colonies in maintaining its own robust coinage well into the fourth century, partly because its position on the eponymous peninsula gave it commercial reach independent of the broader Akarnanian league. The city had been refounded by Corinth in the late seventh century, and its staters reflect that Corinthian heritage in their weight standard — a lineage that persisted long after the political ties had loosened.

The BCD specimen at auction in 2012 established firm die-link evidence connecting several previously unattributed pieces to the Leukadian series specifically.
