背面描述 Helmeted head of Athena facing left, wearing a Corinthian helmet pushed back on the head with the cheek-guards raised, rendered with careful attention to the goddess's idealized features. Behind the neck guard of the helmet appears a small facing head of the bearded river god Achelous, distinguished by his characteristic bull horns, serving as a local ethnic symbol of Ambracia's regional identity. The reverse is incuse, struck within a shallow concave field typical of Corinthian-type coinage. The engraving displays accomplished die-cutting consistent with the mature classical style of northwestern Greek mints circa 340 BC.

附加信息

Ambracia, the Corinthian colony on the Ambracian Gulf, struck Pegasus staters continuously from the late sixth century until the city's destruction by Rome in 167 BC — but the mid-fourth century issues, including this piece, coincide with the city's period of greatest political turbulence. The tyrant Periander had been expelled in the early fifth century, and Ambracia cycled through oligarchic and democratic factions for generations before eventually falling within the orbit of the Molossian kings of Epirus.

Ravel's die study remains the foundational reference for this series, with Colt 137 placing this emission within a well-documented sequence attributable to a specific workshop active in the 340s.
