Corinth's stater coinage dominated western Greek trade networks from the seventh century onward, and issues of this precise period — spanning the collapse of the Bacchiad oligarchy through the Persian Wars — circulated as far as Sicily, Illyria, and the Levantine coast. The type was so trusted commercially that dozens of other minting authorities produced imitative "Corinthianizing" staters, a problem that forced Corinthian authorities to refine their die execution as a kind of authentication measure.
The Ravel 186 attribution places this among a documented but sparsely populated die group. Its absence from the BCD Corinth corpus is notable — BCD was one of the most comprehensive Corinthian hoards ever assembled for study.
