| Beschrijving keerzijde | Facing gorgoneion (Gorgon mask) shown full face within a recessed incuse square, depicted with wide staring eyes, a broad flat nose, protruding tongue, and bared teeth in the apotropaic grimace characteristic of archaic and early Classical Greek artistic convention. Serpents with sinuous bodies radiate symmetrically from the head and coil into the corners of the incuse field, framing the mask. The deeply cut incuse square with its sharply defined borders contrasts dramatically with the boldly modelled relief of the central type. The composition is executed with considerable artistry, combining apotropaic symbolism with fine die-cutting skill. |
