Maroneia, a Thracian Greek colony on the northern Aegean coast, built its early wealth on two commodities: wine and silver from the regional mines. Electrum staters from this period predate the city's better-documented silver coinage and almost certainly circulated across trade routes connecting Thrace with the Aegean islands and Asia Minor. The precise ratio of gold to silver in Maroneian electrum was not standardized — it varied by issue — which complicated their use in transactions outside the immediate region.
