Obverse description Nude male figure, identified as the hero Herakles or Apollo, seated in three-quarter view to the right upon drapery-covered rocks, resting his left arm upon a club or staff set upright behind him; a serpent coils prominently in the lower right field before him, while what appears to be the skin of the Nemean lion drapes beneath. The composition is rendered in vigorous high relief characteristic of the finest South Italian die-cutting of the late Classical period.
