The legend ΘOΥΡIΩN arcs above the bull in the upper field in clear Greek majuscules, identifying the issuing city of Thourioi. A small fish swims to the right in the exergue beneath the ground line, serving as a secondary symbol and likely referencing the city's maritime setting. Thourioi was a Panhellenic colony founded in 444/3 BC on the site of destroyed Sybaris, organized under Athenian initiative and reportedly planned with the urban theorist Hippodamos of Miletos laying out its grid streets. Perikles backed the project directly, and the settler rolls included Herodotos among those who made the voyage. The city's coinage began almost immediately upon foundation, making the earliest staters of this series contemporary with the height of Athenian imperial power and the opening years of the Parthenon's construction.
HN Italy 1775 covers a wide span of the early series. The ANS specimen cited as SNG ANS 2/929 provides the principal die reference point for attribution within this prolific issue.
