Andros was among the earliest Aegean islands to strike silver coinage, drawing on its position astride the northern trade routes between mainland Greece and the Black Sea littoral. The island's staters from this period follow the Euboic weight standard, which placed them in direct commercial conversation with Chalcis and Eretria — the dominant trading powers of the preceding century whose influence over Andros was more than merely cultural.

Relatively few archaic issues from Andros survive, and attribution of the earliest types has shifted more than once in the scholarly literature.
