| Beschrijving voorzijde | The Chimaera, the mythological fire-breathing hybrid creature, is depicted in a crouching, advancing posture to the right, rendered with a lion's body, prominent mane, and open jaws, with the serpent tail curling upward to the left. A small figure, interpreted as Bellerophon, appears astride the creature's back in the upper field, raising one arm. A groundline runs beneath the composition, with the abbreviated ethnic inscription ΣΕ (for Sikyon) placed in the exergual field below the creature's body. The high-relief modelling of the Chimaera displays accomplished die-cutting characteristic of the Sikyonian mint during the late fifth century BC. |
