| Obverse description | Apollo, depicted nude and advancing right in a vigorous stride, his right arm raised overhead and his left arm extended forward holding a laurel branch. A small figure of a daimon (or Nike) stands on the god's outstretched left arm. To the right of Apollo, a stag stands facing right. The ethnic legend KAVΛ (an abbreviated form of the city name Kaulonia) appears in the left field, rendered in archaic Greek lettering. The composition is bold and dynamic, characteristic of the fine South Italian Greek engraving tradition of the late fifth century BC. |
