| Obverse description | Dionysus depicted as a mature, semi-draped figure seated left upon a throne, his body rendered with fine musculature characteristic of late Classical Cretan die-cutting. In his extended left hand he holds a cantharus, while his right arm reaches back to grasp a long thyrsus, the fennel staff of his cult, resting against his shoulder. The deity wears a wreath, and long wavy locks fall to his shoulders. The composition fills the flan with commanding presence, the field left largely blank to emphasize the sculptural quality of the figure. |
