Reverse description A horse standing to right in a naturalistic pose, depicted with fine engraved musculature, occupying the central field above a double exergual line. Three pellets arranged in a triangular grouping appear at the horse's feet within the exergue area, and a circular device is present above the horse's back in the upper field. The composition is unlettered, relying entirely on iconic imagery consistent with Carthaginian monetary tradition.

Additional information

These staters were struck to fund Carthage's military operations in Sicily, where the city maintained contested control over the western third of the island throughout the fourth century. The gold likely originated from trans-Saharan trade networks and tribute from subject peoples in North Africa rather than local Carthaginian mining.

J&L#18 places this among the earliest of the Sicilian-influenced Carthaginian gold issues — the die-cutting showing clear influence from contemporary Syracusan engravers, some of whom may have been working directly for Carthaginian moneyers.
