正面描述 Facing three-quarter left, the wreathed head of the goddess Tanit is rendered in fine Hellenistic style, her hair elaborately dressed beneath a corn wreath. She wears a beaded necklace and a distinctive triple-drop pendant earring. The facial features exhibit the refined workmanship characteristic of late 4th-century BC Carthaginian coinage, reflecting strong influence from contemporary Sicilian Greek engravers. The portrait occupies the full field of the flan with no visible legend.

背面描述 A horse stands in profile to the right, its left foreleg raised and slightly drawn back in a posture of alertness or parade stance, a motif emblematic of Carthaginian coinage of this period. The animal is rendered with naturalistic attention to musculature and proportion, consistent with the Sicilian Greek artistic tradition. The exergual area below the ground line is decorated with a row of pellets or a dotted linear pattern. The field is otherwise plain, with no legend or mint mark present.

附加信息

These electrum staters were almost certainly struck to pay Carthaginian mercenary forces during the intense military campaigns in Sicily, where Carthage was locked in near-continuous conflict with Syracuse. The natural electrum alloy used in earlier issues had given way by this period to a carefully controlled artificial blend, reflecting Carthaginian monetary sophistication rather than reliance on whatever came out of the ground.

Jenkins and Lewis's die study of this series revealed a remarkably high number of obverse dies relative to surviving specimens, suggesting production was rapid and concentrated — consistent with military pay needs rather than sustained civic coinage.
