Squamish issued this dollar in 1986 as part of the trade dollar boom that swept small-town British Columbia and Alberta through the 1980s — a period when dozens of municipalities produced locally circulating tokens to stimulate downtown merchant participation and attract tourist spending. Most were redeemable at participating businesses, functioning somewhere between souvenir and scrip. Squamish's version was struck in nickel-silver rather than the aluminum or brass favored by many comparable issues, giving it considerably more heft than the average chamber-of-commerce token of the decade.
