The oval shield is surmounted by a large closed royal crown rendered in fine detail. The surrounding field is plain and toned, enclosed by a continuous Latin legend and an outer beaded border. Christian VII died in 1808, meaning this pattern was struck in the final years of a reign defined almost entirely by the king's severe mental incapacity — Crown Prince Frederik had exercised de facto regency since 1784. Pattern coinage from this period reflects the mint's ongoing experiments with denomination restructuring as Denmark struggled financially in the lead-up to the state bankruptcy of 1813. Whether this copper strike was ever seriously considered for circulation is doubtful; the speciedaler system was itself abandoned within a decade.
