Christian VII was technically king of Denmark in 1805, but had been incapacitated by mental illness for decades — actual power rested with Crown Prince Frederick, who had governed as regent since 1784. Pattern strikes from this period were produced under the reformed monetary administration that Frederick was quietly restructuring in anticipation of his own accession, which came in 1808. This copper piece is a trial of a silver denomination, almost certainly produced to assess die quality or proposed specifications rather than for any serious discussion of a copper circulating issue at this value.
