The flat obverse field bears incuse or raised archaic Chinese inscription characters identifying the issuing locality or denomination. The handle is hollow and socketed, retaining the stylized form derived from actual agricultural spade implements. The surface displays a patina of green and brown corrosion consistent with prolonged burial.
