Additional information

Edward VIII abdicated in December 1936 before any coins bearing his effigy received official release for circulation. A handful of pattern pieces were struck across various denominations and territories, including this Straits Settlements sovereign, but the abdication froze production before distribution. The Straits Settlements issues are among the rarest of the Edward VIII patterns — the territory's geographic and administrative remove from London meant fewer specimens were produced or preserved in institutional collections.
