The X# prefix in standard numismatic references designates exactly that: non-circulating, privately produced issues outside recognized monetary systems. This particular niobium strike from 1990 falls into a category of Antarctic-themed fantasies that proliferated in the late 1980s and early 1990s, produced largely for the novelty collector market.
