| 背面描述 | A draped allegorical female bust representing the Republic faces right, her hair dressed and partially veiled, dividing the date 18-97 on either side at the mid-field. The upper circular legend reads PATRIA Y LIBERTAD separated by star stops, while the word SOUVENIR appears in the lower exergue. The portrait is rendered in high relief in a neo-classical style characteristic of American late-nineteenth-century medallic art, and the entire design is enclosed within a beaded border. |

The Souvenir Pesos of 1897 were produced not by any Cuban government but by American entrepreneurs capitalizing on public fascination with the Cuban independence struggle against Spain. Struck privately in the United States, they were sold as keepsakes to a domestic audience following intense press coverage — much of it Hearst-driven — of the ongoing insurrection. The "closely spaced date" designation distinguishes a specific die state from the more common widely spaced variant, a detail that matters considerably to series collectors.
