Kadeniuk flew aboard Space Shuttle Columbia in November 1997 as a payload specialist on STS-87, conducting plant biology experiments — the first Ukrainian citizen to reach orbit under a national flag rather than a Soviet one. This souvenir note was issued by the National Bank of Ukraine in 2020 to mark that distinction officially, though it carries no legal tender status and was never intended for circulation.
The inclusion of SPARK optical variable ink is unusual for a purely commemorative piece — that technology is typically reserved for circulating currency with active counterfeiting risk. Its presence here reflects the Banknote Printing and Minting Works showcasing domestic security printing capability as much as honoring Kadeniuk himself.
