Shediac's 1979 souvenir dollar was issued during the peak years of the Canadian municipal dollar craze, when dozens of small towns produced nickel steel pieces through a small number of private minting contractors — most commonly Lombardo Enterprises or similar regional firms. These issues served as quasi-currency redeemable at local businesses during festival periods, typically the summer tourist season. Shediac, which markets itself as the "Lobster Capital of the World," held its annual Lobster Festival that July, the likely occasion for this release.
