Obverse description Right-facing bust of Valentinianus II rendered in high relief, pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed, with finely detailed hair arranged in tight rows of beads characteristic of late antique imperial portraiture. The emperor's youthful effigy is presented with a paludamentum fastened at the shoulder, visible over elaborately decorated armor. The obverse legend encircles the bust within a beaded border, the lettering executed in crisp, well-spaced Latin capitals. The coin displays the refined engraving style associated with the Treveri mint during the late 4th century.

Additional information

Valentinian II's solidi from Trier in this period were struck under circumstances of contested authority. The young emperor had been effectively sidelined by the Frankish general Arbogast, who controlled the western court from around 388 onward. When Valentinian was found dead at Vienne in May 392 — hanged, with Arbogast's complicity widely suspected in antiquity — Arbogast installed the rhetorician Eugenius as a puppet Augustus, ending this issue abruptly.

The Trier mint was among the most productive in the late western empire, supplying gold to the Rhine frontier armies. RIC IX 90a is distinguished from closely related types by its specific officina letter.
