| Beschrijving keerzijde | The emperor Valentinian III is depicted standing facing, draped and cuirassed, holding a long jewelled cross in his right hand and a Victory on globe in his left hand. His right foot treads upon the head of a human-headed serpent coiled beneath him, symbolising imperial triumph over evil. A small figure of Victory, her skirt rendered in the distinctive parenthetical drapery convention of late antique art, stands upon the globe. The reverse legend VICTORIA AVGGG celebrates the victory of the three Augusti, with the mint mark R-V flanking the emperor and COMOB in the exergue denoting gold of the highest standard struck at Ravenna. |
