Valentinian I was a career soldier from Pannonia who rose to the purple in February 364, chosen by the army following the sudden death of Jovian. Within hours of his acclamation he appointed his brother Valens co-emperor, splitting the empire along a fault line that would prove permanent. The Nicomedia mint was among the first eastern facilities to produce solidi acknowledging the new joint rule, striking for Valens rather than Valentinian himself — making a Valentinian piece from this mint a product of the brief administrative overlap before the brothers' jurisdictions hardened.
