| Beschrijving keerzijde | The Emperor Valens stands facing, his head turned to the right, depicted in full military dress including a diadem and imperial regalia. In his right hand he holds a labarum (Chi-Rho standard), and in his left hand he holds a Victory globe (globus cruciger surmounted by a Nike figure), emblematic of his role as restorer of the Roman state. The reverse legend RESTITVTOR REIPVBLICAE proclaims him Restorer of the Republic, while the exergual mint mark KONSAV identifies the emission from the mint of Arelatum. The composition reflects the established Constantinian iconographic tradition for gold solidi of the period. |
