Obverse description Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Valens facing right, wearing a pearl diadem with a prominent rosette at the top. The emperor's portrait is rendered in the late Roman court style with finely detailed hair arranged in rows of beads and a slight beard. A fibula fastens the paludamentum at the right shoulder. The circular legend D N VALENS PER F AVG runs around the periphery of the flan.

Reverse description The emperor Valens stands facing, head turned slightly right, wearing military attire and holding a labarum (chi-rho standard) surmounted by a Chi-Rho christogram in his left hand, and a Victory on globe in his right hand. A Chi-Rho cross appears to the left in the field. The figure stands on a ground line, and the exergue bears the Antioch mint mark with an officina letter flanked by stars (e.g. ★ANT[letter]★). The circular legend RESTITVTOR REIPVBLICAE runs around the periphery.
