Obverse description Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Valens facing right, rendered in high relief characteristic of late Roman imperial gold coinage. The emperor wears a pearl diadem with a prominent central jewel, and his elaborate coiffure is rendered with rows of beaded curls arranged across the crown and temples. The paludamentum is fastened at the shoulder with a fibula, and the cuirass is visible beneath. The encircling Latin legend reads D N VALENS PER AVG, identifying the emperor as 'Our Lord Valens, the dutiful and happy Augustus.' The portrait displays the idealised yet individualistic style typical of the Valentinianic dynasty workshops.
