Obverse description Facing bust of Emperor Theodosius II, pearl-diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed, with the head turned slightly to the right. The emperor holds a spear in his raised right hand, positioned over the right shoulder, while his left arm bears a large round shield decorated with a horseman motif. The portrait reflects the formal, frontal military style characteristic of fifth-century Eastern Roman imperial coinage. The obverse legend is inscribed in Latin around the periphery of the flan.
