The 424–425 dating places this solidus squarely within the regency crisis following the death of Honorius, when Theodosius II moved to assert eastern authority over the western throne against the usurper Joannes. Thessalonica served as the principal staging point for the eastern military expedition that ultimately toppled Joannes in 425, making coins from this mint in this window functionally military issue currency — struck to pay the army assembling for that campaign.
