The emperor holds a spear over his right shoulder and bears a shield on his left arm decorated with a horseman motif, rendered in the hieratic frontal style characteristic of late Roman imperial coinage. The obverse legend encircles the effigy, identifying the emperor with his full imperial titulature. |

A Greek officina letter appears in the field to the left of the throne, and the mint and purity mark CONOB is inscribed in the exergue, denoting full-weight gold struck at Constantinople. |
