Obverse description Helmeted, pearl-diademed, and cuirassed frontal bust of Emperor Marcian, facing the viewer directly in the late antique imperial manner. The emperor wears an elaborate crested helmet adorned with a pearl diadem and is clad in decorated military cuirass with paludamentum visible at the shoulder. He holds a spear over his right shoulder and a shield ornamented with a horseman motif is visible to his left. The surrounding Latin legend D N MARCIA-NVS P F AVG runs clockwise around the periphery of the flan.
